Whether scuttled on purpose to entertain divers or sunk during wars and accidents at sea, shipwrecks are full of history, are magnets for marine life and make for some of the world’s most fascinating dive sites. 

Here on Gozo, there are 4 shipwrecks purposely scuttled for divers pleasure at Xhatt L’Ahmar, including MV Karwela with her world-famous staircase. All four wrecks lay beyond 30 metres and for that reason, a Deep Diver certification is recommended to explore them. 

Becoming a wreck diver will give you the skills, tools and attitude to explore these amazing dive sites safely and confidently with a focus on navigation, limited penetration, dive panning and safety procedures.

Entanglement is a serious risk when wreck diving. The first step is to configure and streamline your existing gear, whether backmount or sidemount; remove unnecessary clutter and remove entanglement hazards in preparation for diving on the wrecks.
Proper planning and preparation form the basis of all successful dives, even more so when diving on wrecks. It is extremely important to get to know the wreck, to know the layout and how to navigate to the descent and ascent points. You will focus on dive planning gas management, including turn pressure calculations.
Learn how to navigate the wreck and identify hazards. Practise both hand and light communication and team procedures. Learn line handling and tie offs whilst focusing on buoyancy and positioning in the water to prevent hazards.
Focus on buddy contact and team protocols, Learn how to deal with silt-outs and limited Visibility. Learn and practise emergency procedures, including out of air ascents.

Wreck Diver Course Certification

Upon successful completion of this course you will be certified to dive wrecks with limited or no penetration.  This certification can also count towards a single specialty rating to achieve the Advanced Diver Development Program

What qualifications do I need to wreck dive?

Some agencies only require Open Water certification before enrolling in a wreck diving course. However, due to the nature of wreck diving, some experience and decent buoyancy is recommended.

What are the risks of wreck diving?

Diving into overhead environments requires special equipment and proper training. Entanglements, silt-outs, light failures and getting lost are just some of the risks associated with wreck diving.

What equipment do I need for wreck diving?

The risks of wreck diving should be considered when choosing equipment. Lights, cutting tools and signalling devices are highly recommended. For deeper wreck dives, a redundant gas supply is required.

Can I wreck dive in Sidemount?

Yes, Sidemount is great for diving in wrecks. Redundancy, increased gas supply and easy access to valves, combined with a more streamlined profile, make Sidemount a perfect tool for wreck diving.

Is wreck diving technical diving?

Wreck diving can be considered as both recreational and technical. Any type of diving that requires diving into overhead environments and diving beyond 40 metres is considered technical diving.

What types of wreck diving are there?

Wreck diving can be divided into 3 main categories: 

  1. non-penetration- diving outside the wreck only
  2. limited penetration – within the light zone
  3. full penetration – diving beyond the light zone
