The Diver Propulsion Vehicle Diver Course is designed to train divers in the use of a DPV and familiarise them with the skills and techniques of using a DPV in a non-overhead environment. You will learn the basic principles of using a DPV, as well as dive planning and team procedures while diving with a scooter.
Whilst the use of a DPV will allow you to cover a much greater area during the dive, the course will focus on in-water skills, such as buoyancy control, as well as the all-important hazards and safety considerations.
This course can be conducted in backmount or sidemount and can be taken in conjunction with our Recreational Sidemount Course if you are not yet sidemount certified. Redundancy, combined with a streamlined profile, makes sidemount an ideal configuration for use with a DPV.
The following areas will be covered in detail:
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be certified as an SDI Diver Propulsion Vehicle Diver. This certification can also count towards a single specialty rating to achieve the SDI Advanced Diver Development Program

Here, Sidemount is not just another course among hundreds of courses - it’s the main event! We exceed all agency standards and make sure you don’t leave the course as a liability on dive sites and boats.
We choose quality over quantity any day!
Small group sizes. 2 divers max per course, 4 divers max per guided dive. Without a doubt, the smaller the group the better the experience.
Courses are completely tailored to you, your needs and your diving preferences.
Perhaps you want to dive sidemount in a drysuit with steels or on holiday in the tropics with a wetsuit and Ali’s. We’ll make sure you’re confident and ready for anything.
Learn to sidemount efficiently and safely by focusing on entries, exits and emergency drills.
Diving in sidemount configuration requires extra consideration for keeping yourself and others safe and taking care of emergencies. Become an asset to any dive team by enhancing and practicing your Rescue skills.
Learn skills and procedures at the right level and become fully competent.
Save yourself months of frustration. Many divers take a sidemount course that is far too basic and leaves them with massive gaps in their knowledge and skills. Don’t be that diver. We have invested in our own diving skills and education and we use this base to teach to the highest level.

(...) One of the standout qualities of Chris and Cloe was their unwavering dedication to ensuring my comfort and safety throughout the entire sidemount diving experience. As a relatively inexperienced diver, their patience and meticulous attention to detail immediately put me at ease. They took the time to thoroughly explain every aspect of the gear and the diving process, making sure I felt confident and informed before submerging into the underwater world.
DPV stands for Diver Propulsion Vehicle, also known as an underwater scooter. A DPV is powered by a battery and operated by a propeller to increase divers’ speed and range underwater.
Most training agencies offer DPV courses. These courses are designed to teach you the principles, hazards, and safety aspects associated with DPV diving.
DPV diving is extremely fun but proper training is required to be able to operate and navigate with the scooter. DPV diving makes diving in currents and over long distances easier.
DPVs range from basic, small, and lightweight scooters designed for recreational diving to expensive, large, and fast vehicles designed for advanced technical, cave diving and explorations.
DPVs enable divers to cover greater areas with less time and effort. They allow for exploration of areas otherwise unreachable by simply swimming and finning.
As a shore diving mecca, Gozo is the perfect destination for DPV explorations. Some of Gozos most beautiful sites such as Double and Triple arches and the newest wreck Hephaestus are reached in no time on a DPV.
Yes. Redundancy and a streamlined profile mean more gas and reduced drag making sidemount an ideal configuration for use with a DPV.
Most training agencies require open water certification to participate in a DPV course. It is recommended to have some diving experience and good buoyancy control prior to taking this course.
The depth of diving with a DPV depends on several factors, such as divers’ qualification level as well as the type of the scooter used for the dive.
Some of the risks associated with DPV diving include rapid descents and ascents, buddy separation, entanglements, and collisions, as well as DPV failures. Proper training can mitigate risks.
